I Must Ask . . . Did You Letter in High School?

Duty makes us do things well, but love makes us do them beautifully. –Zig Ziglar

It seems that the general sentiment in the comments last week is that those who have class rings are glad they do, but don't wear them and those who don't have class rings wish they did. After I posted last week, I pulled my ring out of my jewelry box and had a look at it. It is pretty cool, although the little Home Ec insignia is so small you need a microscope to see it. Still, I'm glad I have it.

I had one other thought about High School and then I'm done revisiting. As I was thinking about class rings, I decided that they are sort of a status symbol, right? They have the year you graduated, your personal interests, perhaps your school mascot on them. It was only logical to move on to lettering, which is probably one of the biggest status symbols in High School. What girl didn't want to wear some hunk's letterman's jacket? Or his letterman's sweater, if he didn't have a jacket. Of course, girls could letter too, but the boys didn't line up to wear their sweaters or jackets. It just didn't work that way.

I have a school sweater from High School and I earned the letter on it. I'll bet you can't guess what I lettered in. Keep in mind that I'm an indoors kind of girl and not particularly coordinated before you guess what I lettered in. You'll never guess. So I'll just tell you. Home Ec. Yep. I'm that cool. I'll bet you didn't even know that someone could letter in Home Ec. But I attended enough events, took enough classes and participated in enough leadership positions that I could actually letter in a non-athletic event.

As always, I'm curious about what you all have to say on the subject. Leave me a comment and vote in the poll because today I must ask . . . did you letter in High School? I'm sure I've forgotten a category or two, so make sure to leave a comment if you don't find what you're looking for in the poll. I can't wait to read your comments. That is my favorite part about this poll series. In the meantime, have a great week!

I didn't letter but I came close to getting a letter for Music. In our High School during my time you could letter in the Arts which included music, art and drama. You had to do lots of the different choral groups and things and it took a ton of time. I came close.

Back in my high school days track was the only sport girls could letter in. A runner I was not. Both my daughters lettered in their high school careers many times in many sports. I still have all their high school stuff at my house to prove it.

Did I letter in anything? Aha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!!! (wheeze, deep breath)... Good one!!

Um, no.

Back in the day, in a school system far, far away, one could only letter in sports. I played tennis...badly...because I wanted people to quit bugging me about basketball, at which I sucked even worse (though we did not even have a BB team until I was a senior...at which point I was supposed to, I dunno, magically turn into Magic Johnson?)

If I could have lettered in clerical office practice or other nerdy stuff, I might have. Sadly, not an option.

I must have been the odd girl out, because I never wanted to wear some hunk's letterman jacket, in fact I couldn't even stand all the jocks. But I did guess home ec for yours, at the same time asking myself, can you even letter in that? I did not know you could. Otherwise, I could of and should have gotten a letter in that. I use to help teach the classes because I was so far ahead of everyone else.

I didn't letter, but I was on Student Council for two of my three highschool years and so I have two sweaters. And yeah, no boys ever asked to wear one. My first year I was the secretary and then my sr. year I was the student body artist. Best job ever. A lot of fun activities, and I made a LOT of pastel chalk posters for every conceivable even under the sun. I actually had crappy jeans at school in my locker that I had to wash each week (kind of like gym clothes I guess) because they had so much chalk on them from kneeling on the floor in the hallways coloring. (That soudns like I'm 6). So yeah, no lettering. But I did get to draw a lot which was a lot more meaningful and useful in my life now than a sport.

hehehe.....home Ec....I WISH! but we didn't even have home Ec classes at my school. If we did, I probably would have taken a comepletely different journey through college.

I actually did letter. I too am an indoorsy kinda gal, and uncoordinated, but I was actually on the badminton team for a couple years. Not that I was actually any good as a player....but I showed up to practices and games and I guess that's good enough. :)

My posts are not going through I think. I'm going to try one more time...

I lettered in band, without even knowing I was earning it. Too bad I didn't know how to earn letters, or I might have tried to earn more.

We don't have letters for things here, and i don't really know much about them other than what i've seen on US TV.
The closest i would have come to anything like that though was when i one a few things when i captained the debating team. We were the only public school that made it to the state finals, and our coach was the football coach (he was the only teacher prepared to coach a bunch of maths nerds in debating), so i was pretty happy with that effort

I didn't play sports in high school. I did buy a class ring, which I loved and would still wear, but it was lost in a move.

BTW, if you had the follow by e-mail widget on your sidebar, I'd do that. Then I wouldn't miss anything you post.

No. Although I should have for band. My teacher picked favorites, though. Even though I was a better musician and I showed up for more events than the person who did get lettered :(
